Army/Shiite clash: Femi Falana calls for Buratai and others' prosecution.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana has called on President Buhari to prosecute the Chief of Army staff Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai and the soldiers that partook in the shooting of Shiite members during a clash with the Islamic group in Zaria, Kaduna state on Saturday December 12th.

In a statement released yesterday December 23rd, Falana said the Nigerian military has refused the injured Shiite members access to their personal physicians and family members...

"Assuming that the Shi’ite members actually blocked the road, why was the nuisance not reported to the police? Are the authorities of the Nigerian Army above the law of the land? The army authorities have refused to release the bodies of those who were massacred to their families for burial while the personal physicians of the injured ones and their family members have been denied access to them. The suspects were refused bail by the Magistrate who ordered that they be remanded in prison custody. Although Sheik El-Zakzaky is reported to have been transferred from a military custody to a police station, he has been denied access to his personal physicians and lawyers".

Buhari says war against Bokoharam has been won, Technically

Below is what he said to BBC during an interview:

"I assure you we haven't failed. Adamawa state, Yobe state are free from Boko Haram. Borno state which is there base, I think they have two to three local government. Boko Haram has reverted to using IEDs Improvised Explosive Device, indoctrinating young girls from 15 years and below to go and explode it in churches, mosques, market places, motorparks.
They have now been reduced to that but articulated conventional attacks on centers of communication and population in towns and so on, they are no longer capable of doing that effectively. So I think technically we have won the war because people are going back to their neighborhoods. We have our committees on the ground liaising with Local governments. People are going back.

Yuletide Message from President Buhari.

Below is the Christmas message from President Buhari to all Nigerians.

I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, on the joyous occasion of this year’s Christmas. On this occasion of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, let us all rededicate ourselves to the virtues of peace, love, honesty, justice, equity, piety, humility and service to others which he taught.
There can be no doubt that a greater manifestation of these virtues and ideals in our lives will immensely help us to become a more united, peaceful, secure and progressive nation.

Let us also reach out in love and compassion to fellow Nigerians who are in distress at this period of our nation’s history.

I particularly urge you all to remember victims of terrorism and insurgency in the country, especially Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The Federal Government will continue to collaborate with state governments and other stakeholders to ease the harsh conditions in IDP camps, while the ultimate objective remains to quickly put an end to insurgency and return the IDPs to their homes.

Merry Christmas to my dear readers!

Photo: TodayNG

Mr. Idakwo asked the court to disregard a bail application by Mr. Kanu’s counsel, Vincent Obeta, as the matter involving his client was terrorism-related.
He said the SSS had evidence of bank accounts owned by the accused person where monies (both in dollars and pound sterling) were allegedly used for financing acts of terrorism against the country.
Mr. Idakwo told the court that Mr. Kanu had dual citizenship of Britain and Nigeria and therefore could flee and escape justice if granted bail.
He also said the bail conditions issued by the magistrate court were yet to be perfected by Mr. Kanu, who is also the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB).
But counsel to Mr. Kanu dismissed the SSS claims on the grounds that they were speculative.

Great Ife And The Failure Of The Gown. Article Written By Reuben Abati.

I have been reading some depressing stories about the state of the Obafemi Awolowo University, formerly University of Ife, which provide an equally depressing metaphor for the state of higher education in Nigeria. Great Ife as that university is known to its staff, students and alumni, is probably Nigeria’s first model university in every respect. Its major competitors were the University of Ibadan, the University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. But Ife was far ahead in terms of the beauty of its environment and the facilities made available to staff and students. Built with Cocoa money (not petro-dollar!) by the Western Region Government, that university was a perfect illustration of the idea of the university and it managed to produce generations of scholars and students, known for nothing but distinction.
I studied at the University of Calabar (Malabites!), and at the time, I took time out to visit all the universities I mentioned earlier. In those days, the top universities in Nigeria were tourism destinations.

Student arrested for impersonating wife of Oyo state governor on facebook.

A 400-Level student of History and International Relations in a private university in Osun State, Adubi, who was arrested by men of Oyo State police command for allegedly impersonating Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, wife of Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, on Facebook, has said the heavy burden of paying his school fees forced him into the crime.

Fielding questions from newsmen after he was paraded by the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr. Leye Oyebade, at Eleyele in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, the suspect explained that the sudden death of his father, who was a laboratory scientist, last year, made life difficult for him on campus.

Adubi, according to the police boss, was arrested on November 25, 2015, for allegedly opening a fake Facebook account purportedly belonging to Mrs. Ajimobi, adding that the suspect had the intention to defraud innocent and unsuspecting members of the public on the wall and timeline of the fake Facebook account by requesting them to pay certain amount into his bank account.

Naira depreciation is caused by massive looting of the past government-FG

The Federal Government has blamed the poor state of the country’s economy, especially the depreciation in the Naira exchange rate, to the mindless looting of the national treasury under the immediate past Administration, rather than any so-called mismanagement by the Buhari Administration.the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement on Sunday.
”If there was still any honour left among thieves, there is no way the leaders of a party under whose watch the nation’s economy suffered a monumental mismanagement and the Central Bank was turned to the ATM or piggy bank of a few people will have the temerity to insult a government that is working hard to turn things around or the citizens who are bearing the brunt of such mismanagement,”
”It is now clear to all Nigerians that if the PDP had won the last general elections, Nigeria’s economy would not have survived one more month, considering the battering it received under the immediate past Administration. It is therefore unconscionable that those who should show contrition and hunker down to avoid public opprobrium are the same ones pointing an accusing finger at the Buhari Administration,” he said.

In a statement signed by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, the senate claimed that the vehicles are to be used for execution of committee assignments, noting that, they are not meant for individual senators...
The vehicles are not meant for individual Senators. They are purchased for the use of the committees.“For those who may want to find out what happened to the ones bought in the past, we cannot expect that after four years, the vehicles will still be in the condition to effectively serve the present committees.
The best practice in government institutions and even private organizations is for official vehicles allocated to top officials after four years of use to be sold at the depreciated value”, Abdullahi stated.
“We have been very frugal, responsive and responsible in our spendings. We have also cut down on several expenses. However, there are certain expenses and purchases that are normal in government and any organisation generally. The legislature is not an exception.

DasukiGate: Bode George tries to absolve himself from being indicted..

Read the statement he released below:

“My attention has been drawn to another mischievous and deliberately fraudulent claim that I collected N100 million from Bashir Yuguda, the former Minister of State for Finance. This is another blatant falsehood, stripped of any iota of truth. This is yet again a depraved continuation of lynch mob journalism orchestrated by an online newspaper. The salient fact is that very early this year, long before the election period, the party set up Contact and Mobilization Committee for each zone to reconcile various factions and ensure a firm unity of purpose within the zones before the election. I was elected as the Chairman for the South-West zone.
